Coating Process Engineer


Job description

Reporting to the Coater Manager, you will take responsibility for providing technical support to the production facility. In this position, you will develop and maintain processes for the thin film coatings team; implement the processes into manufacturing, monitor and improve coating processes, procedures and equipment to support company products.

The basic function of this position is to support the MSVD (magnetron sputtering vacuum deposition) vacuum coater operation on a day to day basis as well as provide process development and continuous improvement. The Engineer must maintain open communications with downstream production processes and coater operators to ensure operational problems are understood and eliminated. Additionally, these open communications will lead to process improvements. The Coater Engineer must interface well with all levels of the management team.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize optical thin film deposition processes to meet requirements. This includes but is not limited: characterization of sputtering conditions, familiarity with most optical coating materials and their domain of application, training technicians, developing new optical coatings, implementing process control methodologies, technique, or equipment, tracking process performance using SPC and correcting escapes.
  • Position is familiar with typical optical testing such as spectrophotometry, stress measurements, environmental testing, and other relevant metrology
  • Position is responsible for product set-up (minimum down time), process performance, and promoting and implementing sound data-based process improvements.
  • Work with R&D to drive the introduction of new products into production from process development to full production and profitability
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of thin film optics production issues. Review and analyze films and coater process control system and make corrective action as necessary
  • Manage defect issues, implement root cause solutions to those issues, and continuously promote and implementing process improvement, quality and cost performance
  • Assume a leadership role in the implementation and execution of process control functions such as SPC and FMEA
  • Manage the development and maintenance of manufacturing documentation
  • Provide technical support and training to product line technicians
  • Maintain daily contact with the other coater staff to discuss production activities, quality, process, operating procedures, policy, complaints, and personnel problems
  • Keep the Coater Manager apprised of serious process control issues as well as significant potential improvements
  • Continually seek ways to improve the process through projects. This is accomplished, in part, by staying abreast of current technology.
  • Establish operating parameters for new equipment, conduct optimization experiments
  • Support R&D experiments on production equipment. Assist in the planning, execution and analysis of these experiments

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master s Degree in Materials Science, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Ceramic Engineering, Physics, or one of the Engineering disciplines
  • 5+ years of applicable industrial experience
  • Thorough understanding of the MSVD process.
  • Experience in thin film optical coatings and applied material science techniques used in a production environment, with knowledge of reactive magnetron sputtering process and equipment.
  • Must be able to work independently and multitask in a fast paced production environment.
  • Must be able to respond immediately to production problems while maintaining a long term focus on improvement.
  • Must be able to manage complex projects taking them from concept to reality. This can include initiating and coordinating project work with other functional areas.
  • Ability to clearly present and communicate ideas, concepts, and plans across multiple levels
  • Ability to conduct design and process failure modes and effects analysis
  • Experience with complex projects, ability to analyze problems quickly and develop corrective actions
  • Ability to generate design of experiments (DOE) documentation and execute the plan(s) associated with them is desired
  • Experience with thin film software and a good understanding of optical thin film design is desired.
  • Solid background on correlation of process and coating equipment hardware
  • Understanding of SPC
  • Hands on experience in manufacturing operations and an understanding of manufacturing documentation and quality practices is required
  • Ability and desire to work in a team environment and to interact with production technicians and design engineers is essential.
